Hyperhidrosis Treatment
Cosmetic Treatments
Hyperhidrosis treatments are essentially injections of Botox for sweating, which can reduce sweating by up to 95%.
Symptoms
While the main symptoms are excessive sweating (wet and clammy soles and palms, sweat soaking through clothes, etc), secondary symptoms can arise such as fungal or bacterial skin infections. Excessive underarm sweating tends to start in late adolescence, but on the palms and soles of the feet it can begin earlier.
Diagnosis & Treatment
If the doctor suspects there could be another underlying cause for your problem, blood or urine tests might be ordered to rule out factors such as a thyroid condition or low blood sugar. Other diagnosis tools include a medical questionnaire which includes analyzing the patterns of your problem (for example, do you sweat at night time – many sufferers of primary hyperhidrosis sweat excessively only during the day).
Hyperhidrosis Treatments FAQs
How are hyperhidrosis treatments performed?
When getting Botox for sweating, small volumes of Botox are injected into the skin. Botox is a toxin that is derived from the bacterium clostridium botulinum. It is injected in small amounts under the skin to target muscles and temporarily restrict their movement. In this procedure, the botox blocks the actions of the nerves that supply the sweat glands; preventing them from producing sweat.
How long does this take?
A small amount of Botox is injected into 10 to 15 places about 1.5 – 2cm. The procedure takes approximately 30 minutes.
Does it hurt?
Only minimally. Hyperhidrosis treatments in the armpit area are barely felt as the skin in this area is thin.
How quickly does it work and how long will the effects last?
You should notice an improvement in your condition within a week of treatment. Results of Botox for sweating can vary, but most patients report a 95% reduction in excessive sweating for six to eight months after treatment.
